Prospects for CP-violation searches in the future experiment with RF-separated K+/- beam at U-70
The first description of the experimental program "OKA" with RF-separated
K+/- beam at Protvino U-70 PS is presented. The parameters of the beam as well

Inelastic Photoproduction at HERA: a Second Charmonium Crisis?
The measurement of the inelastic photoproduction of charmonium at HERA seems
to have ignited a new charmonium crisis. The (already discredited) color
singlet model fits the data for large charmonium energy fraction z, where the
NRQCD model qualitatively fails. We here point out that by the straightforward
inclusion of color singlet and octet processes in the soft color (color
evaporation) scheme, the HERA data can be accommodated for all z. We anticipate
that the color singlet model will fail at low z, as it does in hadroproduction.Comment: 10 pages, Revtex, uses epsfig.sty to include 4 postscript figures.

Principal component-based image segmentation: a new approach to outline in vitro cell colonies
The in vitro clonogenic assay is a technique to study the ability of a cell
to form a colony in a culture dish. By optical imaging, dishes with stained
colonies can be scanned and assessed digitally. Identification, segmentation
and counting of stained colonies play a vital part in high-throughput screening
and quantitative assessment of biological assays. Image processing of such
pictured/scanned assays can be affected by image/scan acquisition artifacts
like background noise and spatially varying illumination, and contaminants in
the suspension medium. Although existing approaches tackle these issues, the
segmentation quality requires further improvement, particularly on noisy and
low contrast images. In this work, we present an objective and versatile
machine learning procedure to amend these issues by characterizing, extracting
and segmenting inquired colonies using principal component analysis, k-means
clustering and a modified watershed segmentation algorithm. The intention is to
automatically identify visible colonies through spatial texture assessment and
accordingly discriminate them from background in preparation for successive
segmentation. The proposed segmentation algorithm yielded a similar quality as
manual counting by human observers. High F1 scores (>0.9) and low
root-mean-square errors (around 14%) underlined good agreement with ground
truth data. Moreover, it outperformed a recent state-of-the-art method. The
methodology will be an important tool in future cancer research applications
Second language user support
Computer users rarely experience entirely trouble-free interaction. The natural variety ofindividuals ensures that no software systems yield constantly fluent interaction for allusers. In consequence, software designers often strive to ameliorate this situation bybuilding 'user support' into their systems. User support can take different forms but,conventionally, each aims to assist the needy end-user by means of facilities directly supporting the performance of certain operations, or through supply of information thatadvises the user on available system functionality.The present paper briefly characterises a range of user support facilities before describingone requirement in greater detail. This aspect considers the needs of users whose mother-tongue is not English, but who are obliged to use English-based information systems. Inthis context, 'helping the user' must reasonably extend beyond mere advice on systemoperation to selective elucidation of information content. We regard this move as alogical extension of the user support concept, by seeking to address specific interactionneeds in a target user population. An example of this approach is described through aninformation system, in the domain of civil engineering, for native Chinese speakers ofEnglish
On Forward J/\psi Production at Fermilab Tevatron
The D0 Collaboration has recently reported the measurement of J/\psi
production at low angle. We show here that the inclusion of color octet

Soft Color Interactions and Diffractive Hard Scattering at the Fermilab Tevatron
An improved understanding of nonperturbative QCD can be obtained by the
recently developed soft color interaction models. Their essence is the
variation of color string-field topologies, giving a unified description of
final states in high energy interactions, e.g., diffractive and nondiffractive
events in ep and ppbar. Here we present a detailed study of such models (the
soft color interaction model and the generalized area law model) applied to
ppbar, considering also the general problem of the underlying event including
beam particle remnants. With models tuned to HERA ep data, we find a good
description also of Tevatron data on production of W, beauty and jets in
diffractive events defined either by leading antiprotons or by one or two
rapidity gaps in the forward or backward regions. We also give predictions for
diffractive J/psi production where the soft exchange mechanism produces both a
gap and a color singlet ccbar state in the same event. This soft color
interaction approach is also compared with Pomeron-based models for
diffraction, and some possibilities to experimentally discriminate between

Flipping the switches: CD40 and CD45 modulation of microglial activation states in HIV associated dementia (HAD)
Microglial dysfunction is associated with the pathogenesis and progression of a number of neurodegenerative disorders including HIV associated dementia (HAD). HIV promotion of an M1 antigen presenting cell (APC) - like microglial phenotype, through the promotion of CD40 activity, may impair endogenous mechanisms important for amyloid- beta (Aβ) protein clearance. Further, a chronic pro-inflammatory cycle is established in this manner. CD45 is a protein tyrosine phosphatase receptor which negatively regulates CD40L-CD40-induced microglial M1 activation; an effect leading to the promotion of an M2 phenotype better suited to phagocytose and clear Aβ. Moreover, this CD45 mediated activation state appears to dampen harmful cytokine production. As such, this property of microglial CD45 as a regulatory "off switch" for a CD40-promoted M1, APC-type microglia activation phenotype may represent a critical therapeutic target for the prevention and treatment of neurodegeneration, as well as microglial dysfunction, found in patients with HAD
Soft Color Enhancement of the Production of J/psi's by Neutrinos
We calculate the production of J/psi mesons by neutrino-nucleon collisions in
fixed target experiments. Soft color, often referred to as color evaporation
effects, enhance production cross sections due to the contribution of color
octet states. Though still small, J/\psi production may be observable in

Testing Color Evaporation in Photon-Photon Production of J/Psi at CERN LEP II
The DELPHI Collaboration has recently reported the measurement of J/Psi
production in photon-photon collisions at LEP II. These newly available data
provide an additional proof of the importance of colored c bar{c} pairs for the
production of charmonium because these data can only be explained by
considering resolved photon processes. We show here that the inclusion of color
octet contributions to the J/Psi production in the framework of the color
evaporation model is able to reproduce this data. In particular, the
transverse-momentum distribution of the J/Psi mesons is well described by this
